Whirlpool washer not starting is a common complaint these days, given the complexities of modern appliances. One might think that the manufacturers are doing this to us on purpose just to keep business going 😉
I have come across 3 different problems related to the Whirlpool washer not starting – If your Whirlpool washer is not spinning or agitating, read this article to diagnose and fix the problem.
1. Whirlpool Washer Not Starting after Power Outage
If you have a large family like mine, at least once in a while, there will be a power outage. When the power comes back on, you go to the laundry room only to find your washer not starting up. You press the power button, and everything lights up inside, but it just won’t start.
Solution
The first thing you should do is to unlock the door and check inside for any obvious signs of jamming – like a sock, etc.
If there’s nothing wrong with that, make sure that your electrical breaker doesn’t trip. If you have the same model of washer at your neighbor’s house, try to use that breaker for 1 minute. That should reset it.
If none of that works, you probably have a faulty door switch. The easiest way to check is to open the door and disconnect the door switch assembly from the wires – carefully! – and jump across two of its terminals with a screwdriver. If your washer starts, the switch is bad.
If jumping across the terminals doesn’t work, remove the switch and test it with an ohmmeter. Replace if found defective.

2. Whirlpool Washer Not Starting- Drum not Spinning
This problem occurs when you open the door and find the drum not spinning. Also, there is no water going in through the supply hose.
Solution
The first thing you should do before even opening the washer is to throw a wet towel over it for a couple of hours – or until you can throw a wet towel over it 😉 This will make a difference if your problem is related to low water pressure or a faulty water pump.
If you find no change with the wet towel, check for power at the outlet where your Whirlpool washer is connected. If there’s power, make sure that it’s not tripped by any of your appliances. Check for a tripped breaker in your electrical panel and turn it back on. If you find power, but find that the Whirlpool washer is still not starting up, then it’s probably time to call a technician.
3. Whirlpool Washer Not Starting- not Agitating or Spining
This problem occurs when there is no water going in through the supply hose, the water level is normal, but when you press the Start button, nothing happens. The drum won’t even spin when you use the timer to do a quick wash cycle.
Solution for Whirlpool Washer Not Spinning or Agitating
The first step would be to open up the washer and check if there’s any obvious blockage in the water pump outlet hose. If you find something, remove it and start the washer again. If that doesn’t solve your problem, check for power at your Whirlpool washer – if there’s power, turn it off immediately. Check the wiring harness connector to make sure that it is connected tightly. You can also check for a clogged filter in your drain pump. If you do find a clog, remove it and check if that solves the problem.
Conclusion
There are several reasons that can cause Whirlpool washer not to start problems. The 3 problems explained above are the most common ones.
