Causes of Chronic Diarrhea 3 Common Causes

There can be many different causes of chronic diarrhea. It is not a nice thing and can have a very debilitating effect on the health of a person if it continues for an extended period of time. Other complications of the condition can be dehydrations, a general weakening of the system and overall ill health. Here are some of the causes of chronic diarrhea.

Bacteria, viruses and germs.

These can enter into the system in different ways. They can be carried in by food, water or even via the air. Once an infection has entered the body in this way it can take a doctor or specialist quite a lot of detective work to find out what the exact problem is. If you find you are suffering from an extended bout, it is important to tell your doctor exactly what you may have ingested, or if you have travelled anywhere where it is possible that you might have caught the infection from.

Taking antibiotics Causes

It is very common to suffer when you are taking a course of antibiotics. The problem with this is that the drug probably won’t have a chance to become absorbed into your system, therefore whatever infection you have probably won’t be killed. You must tell your medical practitioner if you have this problem whilst taking a course of antibiotics.

Food intolerances Causes

The digestive tract of the body is quite sensitive, and it’s not unheard of to suddenly develop a food intolerance, even at a later stage in your life. This is particularly common with diary products. Diarrhea can be a symptom of an intolerance to a certain foodstuff. You may well need to see a specialist to find out exactly which food is affecting you.

Any diarrhea which continues for more than 48 hours needs to be taken seriously, or 24 hours if it is a young baby or an elderly person. If it continues on and off over a long period of time then you will need to seem medical advice to find out the causes of your chronic diarrhea.

If you have always eaten salty foods, anything with no or only a little amount will not taste very nice. You will need to wean yourself off of the taste, and may need to do it gradually. Remember that food labelled ‘low in sodium’ only have a reduced level, they are not free from it. Don’t add any extra to your food, and although this may take some getting used to, eventually your taste buds will become accustomed to the flavour.

Excessive sweating

When you sweat you lose salt and electrolytes from your body. If the weather is unusually hot, or you are being more active than usual, then you may get a craving. However, unless you really are sweating extensively, a normal and healthy diet will contain more than enough to get your levels back to normal Causes.

Use of diuretics Causes

The use of these can lead to a salt deficiency. This can bring about all sorts of symptoms, including muscle cramps, palpitations, confusion, dehydration, flatulence, nausea and vomiting, weight loss, seizures and recurrent infections. If you use diuretics for another medical problem, your doctor should advise you if you need to keep an eye on your salt intake.

There are other reasons for this type of craving but these are some of the most common. Many people who suffer from exhaustion will also crave salt as the adrenals will cause this demand.
